Toyota Vios Turbo
(Update 26/06): 153.01 PS & 19.45 kg-m gained here.
After months of agony and pain of fine tuning with the tuner, the Toyota Vios turbo project is now finally complete. The previous work in progress pictures can be found here.
While the car was on the dyno machine awaiting tuning, coincidentally JUN Auto's President Junichi Tanaka and Chief Engineer Keiichi Hatanaka popped in as they were in town, and they started snapping pictures of the car.
According to JUN, they are currently embarking on a R&D effort to produce aftermarket parts for the 1NZ-FE engine such as camshafts, forged rods and pistons. If this is really true, then this is really good news for all 1NZ-FE owners out there. With proper researched and developed aftermarket parts, we will have a lot more things to play with.
Taking in to consideration the reliability for everyday driving, the engine compression has been lowered to a 9.5:1 ratio and I only went as far as 0.6 bar of boost. The stock injectors were already maxed out at 0.4 bar anyway so additional injectors were fitted to cope with the extra boost.
While a MAP sensor was added for a more accurate tune, the MAF sensor was retained and the voltage is clamped so the stock ECU would not throw a check engine code.
GT Auto tuned the car very conservatively considering the internals are stock standard and this small little 1NZ-FE now produces a usable 143 PS together with 180 N-m of torque at the wheels. Dyno chart indicates the turbo starts building boost around 2,300 rpm and full boost is achieved around 2,850 rpm.
If we do a backward calculation of 20% power loss at the transmission, the engine should be producing around 180 PS and 225 N-m of torque on the crank.
This setup should be just nice for city driving and some occasional sprinting with the car's weight kept at around 980kg.
My only concern now is the auto transmission gearbox, I am not sure how long can the gearbox cope with the additional horsepower before it starts to slip and give way. Oh well, when it does I guess it is probably time to swap it with a manual transmission then.
I knew someone from the Toyota Vios Club whose car is also boosted and he's been running 1.2 bar of boost for the past 3 years on the stock engine and stock automatic gearbox without any problems. The only issue he encountered was his piston rings got fried. He had to get them replaced with aftermarket ones and he's on his way again. That is amazing!

To Spend or Not To Spend?
Lehman Brothers, AIG, Merrill Lynch, Bear Sterns, Citigroup .... and the list goes on. With the current ongoing economic turmoil, at times like this one can't help but think about ways to prepare for the coming storm.
Looking back for the past few years I suddenly realized I've been parting ways with a lot of my savings for things and reasons I don't even know what real purpose do they serve in the first place.
Due to an expensive hobby that I have recently, I had to part with a hefty sum of money and I'm starting to be more conscious and alert on my spending now.
Although our beloved government is pushing hard for the nation to spend more, little do they understand that currently a lot of the ministries are run by a bunch of morons who has no financial sense at all.
Here's a good example:
Employees' Provident Fund (EPF)
EPF declares the dividend payout for 2008 at 4.5%, while 2007 was at 5.8%. However, despite the financial meltdown, EPF recorded its highest earnings of RM 20 billion in gross last year, which is an 9.35% increment from the RM 18.29 billion recorded previously.
So tell me? How the fuck they come to 4.5% divident payout? And EPF is suppose to be the custodian of our money because we're deemed as we do not have the discipline in saving, let alone grow our money.
Let's face it folks, our hard earned money has been poured to save fucking Valuecap's sorry ass. That is why I say our country is run by a bunch of morons.
Anyway, the more I think about it the more I'm going to curse. I've decided to take the higher path and head down to a cafe nearby my house to have some ice dessert to cool down.
Mango Snow Ice
It's called Pao Bing or Mill Wheel Ice. Unlike your typical ABC ice kacang or cendol, the taste and texture is totally different. Something totally unexpected I would say.
How good is it? Well, I suggest you head down to their nearest cafe and find out for yourselves.
I brought Alicia along and to give you an idea how good it really tastes, the picture below says it all.
